With comedy week among us, I would like to introduce a new series I’m starting called Only In Anime. This will be a series of short-medium length written observations of things I’ve noticed, related to anime/manga, and then me ranting about them. I will write about anything, tropes, certain characters, entire shows, weird stuff in the fandom, there is no limit. For comedy week, I will write one a day. Lets start with the inspiration for why I decided to write this.

Meet Ichika Orimura, one of the biggest anomalies in anime. He is the main character of the (trashy, yet somehow likable) series Infinite Stratos. He is in some aspects like any other harem protagonists; he’s kind, wants to get stronger to protect his friends, many girls like him, and of course gets into comedic sexually awkward situations with the girls of his harem. Nothing out of the ordinary here so far. He is also oblivious towards the feelings the girls in his harem have for him, which is usually another common characteristic of harem protagonists. Notice I said usually, because this is where Orimura differs, as he takes this to a whole other level.

What other character in anime could take the words, “Go out with me” as going out shopping with someone? Why would a woman want to hold someone’s hand so they won’t get lost? What, do you think they’re three years old? Literally one girl calls you their spouse (in Ichika’s unfortunate case he was the wife) and you literally think nothing of it. The following situations listed are only some of the character defining moments of how dense Ichika “apparently” is.

Now granted there probably are other characters who are just as dense as Ichika, but let’s be honest here, those characters are just wannabes. You can use Ichika’s denseness as a measuring standard to compare other anime character’s denseness. Ichicka’s denseness is a source of frustration for fans of the series, who are patiently awaiting the day he’ll finally grow up and realize what’s going on around him, so he can then end up choosing best girl Charlotte.
